Google trends allows us to see what people all around the world are searching for and what is/has been trending worldwide. By typing the term 'Horror' into the google trends search bar it allows you to see how often any horror films have been searched for over the years and if the popularity of the genre has increased at all.
Also by scrolling down on the site we can see the top most searched for horror movies at that moment.
Currently number 1 on the list of films is The Conjuring, which was released in 2013. This film has become increasingly popular ever since its release, especially since the sequel released earlier on this year (June 2016). The next films on the list include Sinister 2, Unfriended, Jessabelle and Insidious which are all supernatural horror films. This means that there is a clear gap in the market for our slasher OTS as supernatural is the most searched horror film. |
Then by searching for 'slasher' in the category of movies allows us to see how popular the subgenre is as a whole worldwide and how much it's searched for.
We can see from this graph, showing how often the horror subgenre has been searched worldwide, that there has been an extreme increase in popularity over the past 4 years. During the start of 2016 we can see that the popularity of the subgenre increased rapidly, this means that it would be the perfect time to create and release a slasher horror film due to interest in the sub genre over the past year. |
If we look, again, at the most common related topics we can see what people associate with the sub genre of slasher and what films in that category are most commonly searched.
The first two related searches are not useful for our research but we can see that the film The Cabin in the Woods is a popular film, searched for often. The film is a popular slasher which made a huge $66 million in the box office worldwide with a budget of $30 million. The films Come and See (1985) and You're Next are then closely followed. Come and See is an older, dated slasher horror film which is still clearly popular. You're Next is an interesting slasher film where the killer(s) are wearing masks.
