Time of day:
When filming our OTS it is important that we film the right time of day to get the most effective lighting.
The first few shots where the audience are introduced to Shannon's character and the fact she is being stalked both online and in person, these shots must be filmed in the day to show the normality of the situation and to make the audience feel safe. It will highlight the fact that Shannon is just like any other person but is now in a situation where she is perceived as vulnerable.
10:00-3:00am- We are filming our OTS during the height of winter so these timings are specific because of the timings of the sunset. By filming our first few shots between these times means that these shots are going to be light to make the audience feel safer. The shots filmed between 10:00-3:00am will help build the tension for our audience because they know that it's a horror film and that something bad will happen.

One example of a horror film which begins in daylight is Don't Breathe, in the OTS we are able to get to know the characters before the narrative has fully begun.
4:00-7:00pm- The last few shots of our OTS include Shannon waking up in a multi-story car park in the evening. We want these shots to be filmed at night time when it's dark because this will help build the tension for the audience as we associate the most scary of things to occur during the later hours of the day. Also the shots before hand with our villain chucking Shannon into his car boot should be filmed around 4:00pm when it is it gradually getting darker and the sun has set, then the shots in the car park being filmed afterwards will show that time has passed since she's been knocked out.
An example of a film which starts in the dark to make the audience feel less safe straight away is Scream. The darkness makes the audience feel more unsettled as they know the worst things happen at night when less people are around.
Lighting:
The lighting within horror films is very important as darker lighting is usually seen to be more scary and can quickly change the atmosphere within a scene or shot. For our OTS we thought it would be important to use a range of different lighting to gradually build the suspense.
At the start of our OTS we decided to film in the daylight to get natural lighting. If we would've filmed the opening shots in the dark this wouldn't have allowed our audience to relate. Filming in natural lighting in the afternoon means our viewers can can get a true sense of what is going on without unnecessarily feeling anxious.
When the villain poisons the victims perfume we wanted to use low key lighting to really show that somethings isn't right. In order to do this we turned off all the lights in the room which created a slight shadow effect on the wall which looked really dramatic when going from natural lighting to darkness. At the end of our OTS we filmed in a multi-story car park. One of the reasons we wanted to film in the car park during was due to the lighting that would make our audience feel unsettled. We don't all think of a multi-story car park as a safe and protected place during the evenings so when the lighting changes to this it helps create an eerie atmosphere.
We chose not to use any artificial lighting throughout our OTS as we wanted the lighting to reflect the mood and in the locations we used the lighting was ideal so didn't require any extra lights.
